This alternate version of the Mekons' second A-side (originally released in 1978 as Fast Products 7) doesn't capture the ham-fisted glory of the original. The introductory drum roll doesn't threaten to pin the recording meter flat against the right edge of the red zone, the rhythm guitars don't develop the same brain-mashing insistence, and the point at which the drums finally crest doesn't deliver the momentary catharsis of the original. This version simply doesn't assault the listener with its introduction, the lead guitar riff isn't as psychotically nagging, the bass isn't as pushy, and Mitch Flaco's vocal, though more thuggish than the original, isn't as desperately compelling. You can still hear the brilliance of the song, but for full effect, chase down the original single as collected on the CD Heaven & Hell. [©2009 hyperbolium dot com]
